10 / Absa KKNK klap! 2012: A festival within the festival:

KKNK

The Absa Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (Absa KKNK) is a South African festival for the performing and visual arts, which is presented annually during the March/April school holidays in the town of Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo.

Klap! is a festival attendance package for high school learners that aims to encourage a high standard of creative thinking and exposure to cutting edge performing and visual arts, by means of active participation. This package is suitable for learners with Afrikaans as a first, second or third language and takes place from 31 March – 3 April 2012.

Learners attending the festival can expect leading productions, discussions with directors and/or artists, a choice of inspiring workshops presented by prominent artists in the industry, as well as discussions for, and by, the learners themselves. The programme also creates opportunities for social interaction and is compiled with the goal to stimulate creative thinking.

Learners from Westerford High School in Rondebosch, described their klap! visit as “a remarkable experience”. “This (the klap! programme) was open to many other schools around South Africa and thus a whole community of youngsters was formed.” The teacher accompanying this group of learners describes her favourite part of the festival and the klap! programme as “hearing all the students’ stories about how their minds had changed from being very hesitant about the festival, to being very grateful that they had experienced such an amazing event”.

The conclusion of the school’s participation in the klap! programme, as seen on the school’s website, reads as follows: “the Westerford party highly recommend the Absa KKNK as an experience of a life time. It is indeed true that local is lekker.”

The Absa KKNK takes place from Saturday, 31 March to Saturday, 7 April 2012 in Oudtshoorn.
